Today is a celebration to all of the people in Libya by the death of one of the worst criminals, not just in Libya, but in the whole Middle East. I remember once, I heard a historian describing him as craziest leader ever been in the Arab world in several hundreds of years. As I join celebration with the rest of world, I share few stories I heard either from TV, or read about them, on Gaddhafi family madness and crimes in football:
- 1982: Libya organized African Nations Cup, and Libyan team did the best in their history, reaching the final, only to lose to Ghana by penalty kicks after a 1-1 tie. Watch the goals. In the opening ceremony, Moammar Gaddafi was invited to say few words to open the competition. He was expected to speak from one to three minutes. He gave a political (insane) speech for one and half hour. No one knew what's going on.
- 1996: "The game of death" as the free Libyan likes to call it. It was the usual derby Al-Ahly vs. Al-Ittihad. The two sons of Moammar were big fans. Saadi Gaddafi was on Al-Ahly side, and his brother Mohammad was on Al-Ittihad side.
There are so many stories of what has happened one day before the game, and on the game itself. Media censorship also helped to suppress the true story too. In the most conservative stories, however, Al-Ittihad fans were chanting against Al-Ahli fans, and Saadi officers (some says special force) opened the fire on the fans on the stadium. There were at least 20 people died on the stadium.
Stories go that the parents of the death were forced to sign that their sons were hooligans to receive the dead bodies. Link to the story in Arabic in Koora.com.
- 2000-2007: Saadi Gaddafi football career. The insane man played to Al-Ahly then to Al-Ittihad where he killed their fans few years earlier. Then, he paid a lot of money to three Italian teams:
. Perugia: played for one game then he failed a drug test.
. Udinese: played for ten minutes.
. Sampdoria: only stayed at the substitution bench.
He was an official player in Libyan team and best player in Libya for many years. Watch this crazy moment of Libya vs. Canada:
- 2002: Due to the strong relations with Italy, Saadi convinced Italy to play the super cup in Tripoli. The game was between Juventus and Parma. The game was just about to be cancelled, and the teams had to wait many hours in the airplane before allowing it to take off. Apparently, the father heard about it and decided to cancel the game as Italians were the ones to occupy Italy early in 20th century. It took Saadi to visit his father in his palace to convince him to let the game goes as planned.
I am sure that the history got much more insane stories about the mad family. What's good, that we can say from now on, that it became a 'history'.
I end up by posting the Libyan new freedom flag, and the new national anthem:
