Cristiano Ronaldo made a history today when he scored twice in an 8-1 victory for Real Madrid vs. Almeria. He became the first ever player to score 40 goals in the La Liga history in a single season. I am not a big fan of Cristiano, but I have to admit respecting his wonderful skills and abilities. He scored 40 goals out of 102 goals for Real in the La Liga, this is just overwhelming impressive. Yet, the most important goal for him this season wasn't in the La Liga but the winner in the Copa Del Rey final vs. Barcelona.
Every time I watch Cristiano doing great game, I just cannot stop admiring the great vision of Sir Alex Ferguson. I always remember in 2003, when Beckham left to Real Madrid, and I heard about an 18 years old new Portuguese player called Ronaldo, and that is the player to replace Beckham. The first time I saw Ronaldo, I thought he definitely got some nice talent, but for 15 million Euroes? and to expect him to replace David Bekham? I was like "Come-on!!"
Did Alex know what was he doing? or it was time for him to retire?
What's really more impressive is when I knew that Liverpool wanted to purchase Cristiano one year earlier but they thought he was too young. Next year, Alex saw him with his team Sporting beating Manchester United 3-1 in a friendly, and he just knew that he would be the next big thing for Manchester United.
When Cristiano joined Manchester, Alex asked him to pick his shirt number, he wanted initially to continue wearing 28 as he did in Sporting. Alex insisted on #7. Which was a big psychological assurance and trust as #7 is a unique one in the MU, such as George Best, Brian Robson, Eric Cantona, David Beckham.
This video shows the game that caught the eyes of Alex Ferguson.
